Located at a prominent location of Central, the Central Market has a history of more than 70 years. Its four storeys Bauhaus style building is a landmark in the Central district. It is handed to Urban Renewal Authority (URA) to help revitalize the building into a low-rise leisure landmark filled with a variety of relaxing leisure activities, public amenities, open space and greenery where the public, especially the working population in Central, for their enjoyment throughout the day. It introduces a balance between development and conservation. The Central Market revitalization project adopts the theme “Central Oasis”.

In response to the heritage nature, the prominent location and the public’s expectations for the future use of Central Market, the landscape design of the Proposal aims to respect the historic character of the building of Central Market, provide a quality communal space for the public use, help create a new identity to Central market. In addition to maximizing the use of greenery and creating a welcoming environment to bring people of all walk of life together, it encourages flexibility by taking consideration of providing multi functional spaces for a range of cultural activities or performances.
