The Chinese Revolution in 1911 was, and is, the most important cultural chapter in the history of the Peoples’ Republic of China, manifesting itself as the pursuit of freedom and peace by the Chinese people. With 2011 being the 100th anniversary, it seemed a fitting opportunity for the Wuhan government to establish a historical and cultural memorial as a city landmark while at the same time providing recreational and leisure amenities for the city. Planning concept for this project was to establish a ‘commemorative, mixed-use urban community’. The memorial would be used as a site for 1911 Revolution centennial festivities as well as to provide a permanent symbolic landmark for Wuchang old city. The Chinese red color and the symbol ‘V’ (victory) were used as the two metaphors for the design of the enormous museum in the commemoration garden. They both symbolize the pride of the nation ever since the revolution. These two key - symbolic elements, as well as the traditional abstract cloud pattern representing Wuhan city, are combined with the double cross symbol which represents the 1911 Revolution integrated into a design theme implemented planning stage all the way down to the decorative details.
